How to Disagree Without Arguing | Signe Whitson

How to Disagree Without Arguing | Signe Whitson.  This is a skill I work very hard to teach kids.  They need to be able to stand up for themselves and state their opinions, but need to know that they are not always right, that others have valid opinions too, and that even when they “know” they are right, there are times when they are not going to convince the other person.

Signe does a great job of laying out steps for an older child.  I also like to teach this to younger kids with with these steps:

1) Take a breath and count to five

2) Think about what you want to say

3) Look at the person you disagree with

4) Using a friendly voice, tell them what you think

5) Listen to what they have to say

6) Think about what they said

7) Thank them for listening to you
